Welcome To Athlone Regional Sports Centre’s Swim School
Athlone Regional Sports Centre prides itself on the Swim School. We have over 1,000 children in our Children’s swim school and 220 Adults in our Adults Swim School.
All our Swim School Staff are qualified and trained and we are proud to offer this service to our members at a discounted rate.
This is a great way for you child or yourself to learn lifesaving skill. We offer lessons for all ages from 4 years – adults. Children can progress from our beginner stages to our more competitive levels.
The emphasis is on teaching correct technique over short distances providing the foundations for sound swimming and pupil progress. Our committed teachers are all qualified and attend required courses as part of continued professional development to keep them up-to-date with the latest thinking in learning to swim. This means they are always striving to continually improve all aspects of swimming teaching.
There are certain guidelines we must bring to your attention. We request that you take the time to read these and follow them to ensure that we are able to provide you and your children with the best service possible. Swim School Session Times
Please be aware of the class starting and ending times, and ensure these are adhered to. This assists in a smooth transition for children entering the following classes. Children are allowed to enter the dressing rooms 5 minutes before the class is due to start.
Waiting List Procedure
When your child is placed on our waiting list we will telephone when a place becomes available. You will be required to pay by laser or credit card over the phone or call to our centre’s reception within 24 hours or the place will be re offered to someone else on the list. It is important that you read the class categories to ensure you place your child on the right waiting list. We endeavour to cater for all our customers however there is no guarantee that your preferred time and day will be available.
Awards
All children are accessed and receive a detailed report on their progress and on passing each level receive a certificate of achievement.
What To Bring To Swim School
Swimming Caps Are Compulsory
Caps, Goggles, Ear Plugs, Nose Clips and Swim Suits are available to purchase at reception.

Class Categories
Level 1
Development of water skills, travelling in the water with the use of floats or suitable aids. Pupils must be a minimum of four years old before starting level 1.
Level 2
Introduction and development of a wide range of basic skills. Travelling using a variety of stroke kicking actions without aids.
Level 3
Further skills including jumping in to the water and submerging. Introduction of correct breathing technique and breastroke leg action.
Level 4
Development of new skills including skulling and retrieving objects from the pool floor.
Level 5
New skills including treading water and pushing from the side with correct technique. Development of frontcrawl.
Level 6
New skills including surface dives and swimming underwater. Swimming full stroke frontcrawl, backcrawl and breaststroke.
Level 7
New skills include straddle jump entry and forward somersaults. Swimming 25m of each of the three main strokes using correct technique.
Level 8
Skills already learned are further developed with rotational skills being introduced. All main strokes are further developed over a 25m distance.
Level 9
Skills are developed and combined including a full surface dive to retrieve an object from the pool floor and carried for at least 10m.
Level 10
Swimming 150m continuously, enhanced skills in treading water and lifesaving.
